Just a short driving tour around the academic oval of the University of the Philippines Diliman campus with high school classmates, Ruth Banares David (with husband Vic as our driver) and Ces Afuang. This is the place where I grew up, I spent my teen-age years, and where I went to high, pre-vet and veterinary schools.
Basically, even though our university-supplied housing is no longer existing (my father was a professor at the College of Engineering), it is one of the three places I call home. Much has changed, there are so many new buildings and structures. Where my high school was on Katipunan Road outside campus is now an Ayala mall (UP Town Center). The high school itself was moved on campus next to Vinzons Hall where Narra Residence Hall for Men used to be.
I didn’t get to see Bartlett Hall (the former College of Veterinary Medicine, now the Fine Arts building) and the Veterinary Hospital as they are off the academic oval. I should have asked Vic to drive to there too – just to see my former office as I taught there for several years before the College moved to Los Banos.
But many are still familiar especially the acacia trees that are in full glory, although some of them are threatened to be cut down. Sad to say, the iconic sunflowers along University Avenue are winding down and only the small sunflowers are in bloom. And the academic oval itself … it is now very pedestrian friendly.
Have a look!
